About the Artist

Sherry Stephens was born in a small college town in Ohio, the eldest of four children, growing up intrigued by her grandfather’s photography, her mother’s drawings, and the various handcrafted works of her father, grandmothers, and aunts.Teaching neighborhood children, cousins and younger siblings how to draw, paint, and sculpt using the clay dug out of the banks of the local stream were favorite and formative activities. She met her husband, who is a painter, in a college art class, and they have three sons and two grandchildren.

Her first camera was a tiny 2” Kent camera complete with small scale mail-away film won at a carnival, and her fascination with photography grew from that. Desiring to know about multiple media, she earned a BFA from The Ohio State University and an MFA from Pratt Institute in New York. She has had careers in interior design, graphic design, industrial design, sculpture, and finally teaching at Palm Beach State College. Stephens has experimented constantly with new forms and media, always keeping up with technological advances, always incorporating photography, always drawing upon the possibilities of the new, and frequently taking long periods of time to stretch one medium to its limit. Though she has keep one foot firmly grounded in the rich soil of past experiences and traditional techniques, her other foot is always moving forward into to the new.
